Two Kiln Solutions
I fired my Big Mamma kiln a few days ago and noticed that she fired an extra five hours. Before she was even cool, I was on the phone ordering more elements. I have been on this journey long enough to know there are issues. Elements are the leading cause of a delayed firing. I wanted to get them in time; Portland is only a few hours away. Unfortunately, there was a delay, and they won't arrive until Monday. This is a significant delay, and I couldn’t possibly fire both a bisque and a glaze fire with this new schedule. This is the reason for having two kilns. Now Little sister is about half the size of Big Mamma, but luckily this is a bisque firing, meaning I can stack things on top of each other and have them touching. Unfortunately, the items are still a bit damp, but I believe I can candle the kiln to dry everything out, unload it, and reload it with the items touching each other. This will put me back on track for the glaze fire Monday night after I fix the element in Big Mamma. I can’t help but hear my mother's wise advice of keeping elements in stock in my studio. I guess this is the lesson I needed to learn to start.
